BopCY is an all-Cypriot band led by stellar saxophonist Charis Ioannou. In 2015, Bopcy won the 2nd place in the first Hellenic Jazz Competition ‘Apollon’. Their unmissable, high energy performance will transform your whole week with jazzy, Christmasy happiness!

Charis Ioannou / saxophone
Charis Ioannou studied Saxophone Performance and Jazz Composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In the last year of his studies in Boston, he won the Woodwind Achievement Award, and in 2001, he moved to New York where he earned his Master’s Degree in Performance from the New York University. He has since appeared in all the major jazz clubs and festivals around Cyprus, as well as many countries abroad including, Greece, Kuwait, Germany, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Poland, Serbia, Spain, England, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland and the US. Charis has collaborated with the American Embassy in Cyprus for the Bi-Communal Jazz programme “Jazz Futures” performing alongside the group of Ari Roland and Chris Byars for 6 years during the period 2007-2013.
In 2015, he led BopCy, a quartet with all Cypriot musicians and won the 2nd place in the first Hellenic Jazz Competition ‘Apollon’.
Charis is currently teaching the saxophone and the jazz idiom at the University of Nicosia and is making guest faculty appearances in workshops held in Italy, Lebanon and Greece.
Marios Spyrou / drums
Drummer Marios Spyrou was born in Nicosia in 1990. He was inspired by from an early age by his father, who is also a jazz drummer. He has played extensively with the top Cypriot jazz musicians and has a Masters in Jazz from the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Holland.
Greg just recorded an album (Bridge Of Locks) with the Charis Ioannou & Ioannis Vafeas quartet, performing compositions by Chris Byars.
Greg Makamian has performed with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra & the Charis Ioannou group, presenting the music of Charlie Parker – Bird with Strings.
Greg has had the opportunity to perform next to the legendary Freddie Redd at Smalls in NYC. He has also played with great musicians such as: Chris Byars, Pasquale Grasso, Zaid Nasser, Pete & Will Anderson, Keith Balla, Phil Stewart, Ofer Landsberg, Stefano Doglioni, Charis Ioannou, John Mosca, and many others.
Dimitris Miaris was born in Nicosia in 1991. He started playing classical piano from 6 years old. At the age of 16 Dimitris had his first connection with Jazz through the “Jazz Futures” workshops that took place in Nicosia with great musicians such as Sacha Perry.
The last two years he participated in Dr.Barry Harris’ workshops in Rome. He is also a member of “Neorebetes”, a Greek traditional band, where he plays the accordion. The band has performed in Cyprus, Greece, Kazan (Russian), Sydney and Melbourne (Australia).He received his Bachelor Degree for Jazz iano at the Ionian University’s Jazz Department in 2009 under the instruction of George Kontrafouris.
About Sarah’s Jazz Club
Sarah’s Jazz Club is dedicated to the exciting and quality arts of jazz and blues. Its main aims are to support and showcase Cypriot musicians and build cultural bridges with musicians abroad. The cultural and live music entertainment centre opened in April 2017 in the capital Nicosia. It is located in a multi-cultural neighborhood just off OXI roundabout in the city centre.
Music lovers can enjoy live jazz and blues every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. Running parallel to the live concerts are inspiring art exhibitions in the venue’s gallery.
SJC is the brainchild of Jazz Arts & Communications. It was founded by jazz singer Sarah Fenwick and Director Savvas Hadjigeorgiou.
